BAFTA Nominations 2018: Full List Announced

The Shape of Water leads the way at this year’s BAFTAs, having landed an impressive 12 nominations including Best Film and Best Director for Guillermo del Toro.

The critically acclaimed film, which saw del Toro honoured at Sunday night’s Golden Globes, goes up against Darkest Hour, Dunkirk and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri which each grabbed nine nominations.

Despite a somewhat muted success at the box office, sci-fi noir sequel Blade Runner 2049 was awarded eight nominations, including a best director nod for Denis Villeneuve.

Annette Benning goes up against Frances McDormand, Margot Robbie, Sally Hawkins and Saoirse Ronan for Leading Actress while. following on from his Golden Globes success, Gary Oldman will be hoping to take home the BAFTA for Leading Actor for his role in Darkest Hour . Other names in contention for the award include Daniel Day Lewis, Jamie Bell, Timothee Chalamet and Daniel Kaluuya.

There was also recognition for a number of other British films. Christopher Nolan’s bruising war epic Dunkirk received eight nominations, including Best Film and Best Director, while there were three nominations for Paddington 2, including a Best Supporting Actor nod for Hugh Grant.

Also competing for Best Supporting Actor includes Christopher Plummer, who replaced Kevin Spacey at the last minute in All The Money In The World, Willem Dafoe for The Florida Project, and Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson, who are both nominated for Three Billboards.

The nominations come days after Londoners Daniel Kaluuya and Josh O’Connor made the shortlist for the EE Rising Star award, whose previous winners include Tom Hardy and John Boyega

At a BAFTA press conference, the organisation announced that this year’s ceremony will be hosted by Joanna Lumley following Stephen Fry’s departure after 12 outings as host.

The Ab Fab star, who won the BAFTA Fellowship in 2017, said she snapped up the offer to front the prestigious event “indecently quickly”.

“It’s just so unbelievably thrilling. I’ve been voting for BAFTA for so long and yet every year when you hear the list some part of your heart is thinking ‘oh yes’ or ‘oh no they left that out’ and I don’t have to be connected with that now because I’m above it all now. I said yes indecently quickly.”

The 71st EE British Academy Film Award will take place on Sunday February 18 at the Royal Albert Hall.
