Arguably recognised as the most prestigious night in British film, BAFA have announced Timothée Chalamet, Daniel Kaluuya, Josh O’Connor, Florence Pugh and Tessa Thompson as the 2018 nominees in their EE Rising Star category.

The Rising Star award recognises fresh faces in the film industry and is often an accurate indicator as to who will be dominating our screens over the coming years. It is without question the most significant award for promoting, recognising and supporting emerging British actors.

British stars Daniel Kaluuya, Florence Pugh, and Josh O’Connor, all of whom have already been hotly tipped for numerous nominations this awards season, join American actors Timothée Chalamet and Tessa Thompson.

London-born Kaluuya made a considerable breakthrough last year after leading Jordan Peele’s horror film Get Out, while Pugh won critical acclaim for her role in Lady Macbeth, taking home the British Independent Film Awards’ best actress prize. At the same ceremony, O’Connor won the best actor award for his role in God’s Own Country.

Meanwhile, Chalamet has been hotly tipped for an Oscar nomination for his leading role in Call Me By Your Name, while Thompson recently appeared in the Marvel blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok.

“I’m honoured and grateful to BAFTA and the Jury for the nomination and can’t wait to celebrate it in my home city,” Kaluuya said of the nomination.

Saying she felt truly honoured to be on the shortlist, Pugh added: “The journey to get to this rewarding moment has been exhilarating, and so to feel recognition for doing something I love and the hard work many have put in feels very touching. It’s a very proud moment indeed.”
