Sonic’s newest cinematic adaptation has to be one of the most unfunny experience had in a movie theatre in years.

To bring the little blue spikey monster into the real world, Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) is now an alien creature from a planet of ramps and loops where he was free to run about.

Some evil creatures then decided they wanted to harness his power and forces him to use his golden rings, now interdimensional portals, to escape across multiple planets till he landed on Earth.

Here, living in a small town on the Pacific Northwest, he leads a life of solitude, hidden away from the locals.

The eponymous hedgehog has dreams of being an earthling, but only at night when no-one can see him.

Yet, his powers don’t fly under the radar of the US government and military who – captained by evil Dr Robotnik (Jim Carrey) – set off on a mission to capture the supersonic critter.

In the best buddy movie tradition, Sonic teams up with local Sheriff and overall good guy Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) and through road trips, bar fights and car chases, they will become an unlikely pair of best friends.

Whether you believe that the original dreadful design of Sonic was real and not just a PR stunt, giving this blue ball of quills bigger eyes did not save the movie.

The jokes and physical gags are so dreadfully bland that not even the little kids in the screening laughed at Sonic doing the flossing dance.

Jim Carrey’s performance is honestly painful to watch. To think that this guy was once the comedic genius behind The Mask and he is now doing caricatural villains taken directly out of LazyTown is, quite frankly, sad.

This film tries to portray Sonic as a lovable misfit we should be nostalgic for, but was he ever anyone’s favourite video game character?

Either way, this film isn’t going to do his image any good.
