The world's biggest arts festival, Edinburgh Fringe 2018, is right around the corner. Theatre editor Daniel Perks catches up with Frau Welt, performing herself this year:

Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2018 is open! For its 71st year, the world’s biggest arts festival descends upon the Scottish capital, bringing with it a series of productions that innovate, imagine and leap into the unknown. Fringe veterans and first timers share stage space, flyer side by side and plaster their posters all over the city to try and entice us in to witness their moments of magic.

Here at Miro Magazine, we are incredibly excited by the biggest offering that Edinburgh has ever seen. Throughout the festival, we will be profiling some of the shows playing this year, as well as reviewing, listing and round up every performance. This is our way of getting to know the theatre companies and performers that are hoping to sell out and share their success.

Next up in our Spotlight feature is Frau Welt, which plays at Edinburgh Festival Fringe from 2 – 25 August 2018. We caught up with Frau herself:

Describe Frau Welt in three words.

‘Epic. Hilarious. Heartbreaking.’

Is this your first Edinburgh Fringe performance experience?

‘Ja. My very good friend Angela Lansbury told me that once you reach the pinnacle of success, you must send the elevator back down. And so the time has come to bring my burning bush to the desert of the young and talentless. It’s always a duty, darling, to grace the stage.’

Who else are you most looking forward to seeing while in Edinburgh?

Maureen Lipman in her solo show Up for It, also at Assembly Rooms, to collar her at stage door and demand to know why she blocked the publication of my sensational memoir ‘Lansbury, Lipman & Me.’ What’s she hiding? I’ll tell you if you see me around town…’

Who are your inspirations?

‘I was born with an inbred talent to stride downstage centre, hit my mark and give it to ‘em square. My beloved audience keep me going. Drip-feed me the applause, darling, and my Fluoxetine.’

What is your secret to surviving the intense, fast pace of the fringe?

‘Never drink during a show; only before and after. My team have booked me the Sturgeon Suite at the Scotsman Hotel – spas, strudels and steam rooms to keep me fast and loose.’

What are the future plans for Frau Welt?

‘A well earned rest! When you reach my age, show business is absolutely exhausting. First up, Christmas in LA with Joan Collins and then New Years Eve in the Hamptons with Lansbury and her beloved Alsatian, Barbara. As for my show, a 2019 UK tour is currently being plotted and schemed – keep your holes peeled!’

What is the best production you’ve seen in the last 12 months?

‘My very good friends from my days in cabaret, Thick & Tight, have a wonderful triple-bill A Night With Thick & Tight. They stormed the Brighton Fringe winning acclaim and awards. Mark my words, they are going to be very famous’

Is there anything else you want to highlight about Frau Welt?

‘My show is like nothing you’ve experienced before – cabaret and theatre, song and secrets, epic storytelling that takes you from Weimar Berlin to the bright lights of Broadway. However, all is not as it seems… I am not who you think I am. I have a secret to tell you’
