The world's biggest arts festival, Edinburgh Fringe 2018, is right around the corner. Theatre editor Daniel Perks catches up with the team bringing UniverSoul Circus to the Underbelly Circus Hub this year:

Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2018 is open! For its 71st year, the world’s biggest arts festival descends upon the Scottish capital, bringing with it a series of productions that innovate, imagine and leap into the unknown. Fringe veterans and first timers share stage space, flyer side by side and plaster their posters all over the city to try and entice us in to witness their moments of magic.

Here at Miro Magazine, we are incredibly excited by the biggest offering that Edinburgh has ever seen. Throughout the festival, we will be profiling some of the shows playing this year, as well as reviewing, listing and round up every performance. This is our way of getting to know the theatre companies and performers that are hoping to sell out and share their success.

Next up in our Spotlight feature is UniverSoul Circus, which plays at Edinburgh Festival Fringe until 26 August 2018. We caught up with the team:

Describe UniverSoul Circus in three words.

‘Fun, Thrilling, Interactive.’

Is this your first Edinburgh Fringe performance experience?

‘Yes – Proud. Anxious, Excited, we can’t wait to get started. After 25 years of entertaining American audiences, we’re finally making our European debut and we’re super excited about performing in Edinburgh at the Fringe. This is a world-famous event and having the opportunity to showcase our talent on such large stage is overwhelming.’

Who else are you most looking forward to seeing while in Edinburgh?

‘There’s loads of other amazing circus acts at Underbelly’s Circus Hub that I want to go and see. Our Canadian cousins Cirque Alfonse are bringing Tabarnak which is sure to be a great show, and the amazingly talented Circa are back with Wolfgang too. There is so much going on, though, that I’m looking forward to just wandering around the city to see what I can find!’

Who are your inspirations?

‘There’s no doubt about it, it’s the audience. There’s nothing like the feedback they give us each and every show. When you come to our show, you’re not only an audience member, you’re a participator. You’re going to be up and out of your seat singing and dancing along with the performers. Our show will touch you like no other circus – we’re going to lift your spirits and help you forget about your troubles!’

What is your secret to surviving the intense, fast pace of the fringe?

‘While this is our first time here, I think I’m going to have to pace myself. I’m going to take a close look at the schedule and circle the events that fit in so I don’t overdo it. As well as seeing other shows, I plan to get out shopping and have some great food. I know I can’t see everything…but I have a feeling I’m going to try.’

What are the future plans for UniverSoul Circus?

‘As this is our first European tour, I hope European audiences will embrace us and invite us back. We’re definitely open to travelling the globe to showcase our amazing performers. Our show, filled with death defying stunts, thrills and laughter, is ready to take the world by storm.’

Is there anything else you want to highlight about UniverSoul Circus?

‘We want you to know that our show is for everybody. Invite your friends, family, neighbours and co-workers to come out and experience the UniverSoul Circus. After 25 years of traveling coast to coast in America, and featuring performers from around the world, we have developed a special formula to uplift and thrill ALL audiences. We have hip hop flavoured clowns like you’ve never seen, high wire, Caribbean Dancers, acrobats, aerial acts and contortionists we like to call…The Bone Breakers!’
